Have you ever noticed how the world blurs when you focus on something? Try looking out your window – you’ll see the outside view clearly.

Now, try holding a ball with your hand. The ball is now the main subject, but your hand is still in focus because it’s close – both things are in the same plane.

Here are a few things that will help create a sense of depth in-camera.
1. Perspective and Leading Lines

One of the most common ways to convey depth in photography is by using leading lines.
The above photo demonstrates how lines that should be parallel become converging lines that disappear toward the horizon, creating depth.
This is because of the perspective distortion. You can also try this vertically: Simply look up, and you can see how buildings form converging lines.
Since perspective distortion becomes more intense as distance increases, these leading lines convey a stronger sense of depth.
Leading lines can be human-made elements or natural lines that lead toward the background.
2. Planes of View

Another tip for creating a sense of depth is to include different planes.
Think about three distinct zones – foreground, middle ground, and background. In the example above, you have a fence and grass in the front, the lake and trees in the middle, and the mountains in the back.
Plus, the river leads off into the mountains as well as the road. These natural lines are meandering rather than straight – as you can see, they also create a sense of depth.
This isn’t just useful to you if you’re a landscape photographer. You can apply this concept to all types of photography.
Try doing a portrait with flowers in the foreground, your model in the middle, and a beautiful background.

As I touched on above, the depth of field you use has a big impact on creating depth and dimension in photography.
A shallow depth of field, in which only the subject is in focus and the background is blurred, helps enhance the sense of dimension.
This is because it establishes a distance between both planes.

The quality and angle of the lighting hitting an object change how it casts shadows, which can greatly influence how we perceive depth in an image. A long shadow, for example, can create dimension in a composition.
Showing depth by increasing the contrast is also a good technique. This enhances texture and form.
5. Color

You can also convey depth through color in different ways.
One way is through color temperature. Warm colors seem to be closer than cold colors, creating depth.
The same applies to highly saturated colors against desaturated ones.
You can also use color contrast as a tool because highly contrasted colors will stand out, creating depth between foreground and background.
6. Foreshortening

Foreshortening is a technique for making a subject look longer or shorter in a photograph by adjusting the angle of the camera and the position of the elements in the frame.

How to Add Depth to a Photo in Photoshop
As you can see in the previous section, there are many ways to create dimension in photography. Many of those techniques can be replicated in post-processing.
You can enhance the highlights and shadows using the dodging and burning technique, narrow the depth of field by blurring the background, etc.
Here’s an easy way to do it in Adobe Photoshop by adding a Gradient Map.
Step 1
Start by opening your photo in Photoshop. Then, go to the Layers panel and click the Adjustment Layers button to open the menu.
Scroll down until you find Gradient Map and select it. This will create an Adjustment layer on top of the original.
Step 2
With the Gradient Map layer selected, go to the Properties panel. Select the black-to-white gradient (if you haven’t used this tool before, it’s probably set by default).
You can find it inside the Basic folder of the menu. Your color photo will look black and white at this point – that’s normal.
Step 3
Next, go to the Blend mode in the Layers Panel. Open the menu and select Overlay.
On the right side, you have the Opacity slider. Move it to adjust the intensity of the effect.
Step 4
Lastly, double-click the layer to open the Layer Style dialogue box. Here, use the Blend If tool to fine-tune the effect.
How to Add Depth to Your Photos Online
One of the most common tools for adding depth and dimension to photos online is background blur.
By adding blur, you can simulate a narrow depth of field – a technique that adds dimension to your photos.

How to Add Depth to Your Photos On iPhone and Android
Regardless of which phone you have, you can use these tips to add depth and dimension to your photos.
1. Composition
When taking photographs with your phone, you can still use some of the abovementioned techniques to create depth and dimension in-camera.
You can use composition elements such as lines that disappear towards the horizon. You can also place your subject using the rule of thirds and shoot through a foreground element.
2. Use Portrait Mode
Next, set your camera phone in Portrait Mode. Most camera apps blur the background when set to this shooting mode, mimicking the shallow depth of field created by a camera’s wide aperture.
iPhones even allow you to adjust the intensity of the blur. You can even come back and adjust it after you’ve taken the photo.
Using the Depth Effect on iPhone
iPhone cameras have a Depth control when you shoot in Portrait mode. So, the first thing to do is ensure you’re photographing in this mode.
Then, tap the f icon on the top-right corner of the screen. This will open the Depth slider. Scroll left to diminish the f-stop, which will blur the background.
Once you’re satisfied with the depth and dimension of the scene, take the picture.
You can adjust the Depth Effect on any picture taken with Portrait mode. To do this, simply open the photo in your gallery and tap Edit. Then, tap on the f-stop in the top left corner. Adjust the f-stop to give a sense of depth.
3. Add Overlays
If you couldn’t add dimension and depth while taking the shot, adding overlays can give a sense of depth. Plenty of editing apps have overlays you can use on your photos, such as clouds, bokeh, light leaks, etc.
4. Edit
Lastly, add depth while editing your photos by increasing the highlights and shadows.
Bonus Tip: How to Create Emotional Depth in a Picture
When discussing depth in photography, you may not be referring to the physical sense of dimension. The term depth is often used when the picture transcends the literal meaning of the objects.
For example, when you create a sense of loneliness by photographing an empty playground or evoke nostalgia with a foggy landscape.
To do this, you need to think about your picture before taking it – a snapshot is not going to tell much. You should be aware of what you want to communicate with your picture and consider the best way to do it.
Once you’re clear on that, you can choose the best light to create mood and atmosphere, drawing the viewer deeper into the image. You can also use composition elements to tell the story.
It’s also essential to master the camera settings to control the depth of field, whether a moving element is frozen or blurred, etc.
