Tamron has announced that its 50-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Di III VC VXD lens ($1,299), originally launched for Sony E mount in 2022, is coming to Nikon Z mount. The lens is essentially identical to its E mount sibling but for mounting on Nikon cameras instead of Sony ones.
With a wide focal length range from 50mm up to 400mm, this lens can do everything from travel and street photography to wildlife and sports. It can, perhaps, be the only lens you ever need to own. Or, at least the one that lives on your camera by default.
Tamron 50-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Di III VC VXD for Nikon Z
The Tamron 50-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Di III VC VXD (what a mouthful!) is designed as an all-purpose general carry lens. Something you can keep on your camera that’s ready to go for anything. It may not be the best lens for everything, but it can hold its own.
By “not the best lens”, I mean you’ll often want a faster lens. But a lens of this focal length range with a fast aperture would not be inexpensive – or this small. Lenses with such a long focal length range also tend not to quite be as sharp as shorter-range zooms or primes.
But the original lens for Sony has proven to be very impressive. It’s a very versatile lens. And even if you own a selection of higher-end lenses, this is a good one to keep on your camera when you’re not using it. After all, it’s better to have a decent-quality photo in your camera than an amazing-quality photo you couldn’t shoot because you had the wrong lens on.
And now it’s available for Nikon Z.
