Canon’s New Zoom Lens Is An Ideal Upgrade From A Kit Lens

The introduction of Canon’s new native lens, the RF 28-70mm F/2.8 IS STM, offers a light, compact and reasonably priced zoom option.
Specifically, the new zoom lens might find lots of appeal among starting photographers who want something more robust than a Canon kit lens, travel photographers, amateur videographers and vloggers.
The 28-70mm F/2.8 IS STM, despite its fairly compact size, is built around 15 elements arranged into 12 groups and among these are two ultra-low dispersion elements as well as two aspherical elements.
It also offers an internal image stabilization system with a newly designed, lighter IS mechanism for a lighter and smaller overall lens.
A further innovation in the new lens is that its AF system uses a new type of lead screw-type STM motor with a magnetic sensor for reading the rotational speed of the motor. Canon states that this lets the motor deliver an increased rotational speed while staying precise.

Focus breathing in the lens is also “incredibly minimal” according to Canon. This would be especially useful for videography and vlogging uses.
Another claim for the RF 28-70mm F/2.8 IS STM by Canon is that the lens delivers 7.5 stops of image stabilization at its center and 7.0 stops along the edges as long as it’s mounted to a Canon camera with its own image stabilization. If used in a camera without IBIS, the lens only manages 5.5 stops of stabilization.
Also, though the RF 28-70mm isn’t one of Canon’s pricier L-series lenses, it includes the same degree of weather-repellant construction as a typical L lens.
Canon’s press material for the new optic mentions that its new RF 28-70mm F/2.8 IS STM model is a “new standard zoom lens” and that’s exactly how it can be interpreted by both newcomer and established photographers: a versatile, reasonably robust all-purpose lens that works as a strong replacement for a Canon kit lens.
Noteworthy too is the focal range of the RF 28-70mm. This combined with its other specs makes it very useful for a range of shooting scenarios. The optic’s 27cm or 10.63-inch minimum focus distance also makes it usable as a tool for decent portrait photography.
The RF 28-70mm F/2.8 IS STM is slightly on the heavy side at 495 grams or 1.09 lb but it’s reasonably sized at 7.7 cm or 3.03 inches x 9.2 cm or 3.62 inches. Its filter thread is 67mm.
Canon will start shipping the RF 28-70mm F/2.8 IS STM as of late September. You can however also preorder this RF lens now for a retail price of $1099.
