President Biden has officially withdrawn from the 2024 Presidential race, and the announcement came not during a primetime address, but on social media early Sunday afternoon.Biden first posted his announcement on Elon Musk’s X via the @JoeBiden account.

He then posted the same message on the @JoeBiden Instagram account.In subsequent posts on both platforms, Biden endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris to be his successor: “My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President. And it’s been the best decision I’ve made. Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year,” he said, adding “Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump. Let’s do this.”

VP Harris later posted on her own social accounts that she is “honored to have the President’s endorsement” and said her “intention is to earn and win this nomination.”Biden’s decision to make his announcement on social media is a unique one. Biden’s X account has 38.3 million followers and the Instagram account has 17.2 million.

X hasn’t been an particularly friendly place for Biden of late. Owner Elon Musk recently endorsed former President Donald Trump on the platform after Trump survived an attempted assassination. “I fully endorse President Trump and hope for his rapid recovery,” Musk tweeted; he’s subsequently made a number of posts supporting Trump in the 2024 election.
