PC orders for the upcoming game Ghost of Tsushima are being refunded to people who preordered the game in one of the 170 countries that don’t offer PlayStation Network access.Steam, Epic, and Green Man Gaming decided to cancel the orders, even though the majority of the game is still playable without accessing the PlayStation Network. The game requires PSN account linking to use its Legends multiplayer mode. Sucker Punch Productions even went as far as to call out that the only part of the game that requires PSN access is the multiplayer mode in a post on X earlier this month.

Steam, Epic, and Green Man Gaming also noted the same in a disclaimer on their site before those preorders were made. Despite that fact, all three decided to cancel those orders. Those who preordered on Steam received this message: “You are receiving a refund for a game you pre-purchased Ghost of Tsushima. The publisher of this game is now requiring a secondary account to play portions of this game, and this account cannot be created from your country.”

The move is similar to one that occurred earlier this month with Helldivers 2. Sony added mandatory PSN linking after the game launched, ultimately prompting Steam to remove the game in non-PSN countries and refund customers in those countries who purchased the game, even if they had been playing it for months. Sony eventually rolled back the requirement, but Steam didn’t reinstate sales.
