Meta will no longer recommend political posts to users on Instagram or Threads.“We want Instagram and Threads to be a great experience for everyone,” a blog post on Instagram’s website reads. “If you decide to follow accounts that post political content, we don’t want to get between you and their posts, but we also don’t want to proactively recommend political content from accounts you don’t follow.”If you still want to have political content recommended to you on the site, both sites will offer a control where you can request to see them. Otherwise, by default, political content posted by accounts you don’t follow will be limited. The feature will be coming to Instagram and Threads first; however, Meta plans to roll out the control to Facebook as well at a later date.On Threads, Instagram head Adam Mosseri said “Our goal is to preserve the ability for people to choose to interact with political content while respecting each person’s appetite for it.”

Professional Accounts on Instagram will be able to see whether their posts can be recommended via their Account Status page. An account’s eligibility will be based on whether or not they’ve recently posted political content. If an account is denied the ability to promote posts they can delete recent posts as well as request a review if they disagree with Meta’s decision. The move is Meta’s latest attempt to help control political content. Both Facebook and Instagram also recently started requiring political ad campaigns to disclose that their ads contain AI-generated content in an attempt to curb ads that intentionally mislead the public.
