Instagram is test-driving a new profile grid layout that abandons the app’s icon squares for rectangles. In an Instagram story, Adam Mosseri showed off the test of a new vertical grid for profile pages in response to a user asking, “Please can we keep the square grid?!” during an Ask Me Anything session.According to Mosseri, the square grid was designed back in the day when square images were the only thing you could upload to the app (remember those days?). With the introduction of things like Stories and Reels, Mosseri says that most Instagram uploads are vertical. It turns out that cropping your 4x 3 images or 9x 16 video to fit in a square in the grid isn’t super fun. Mosseri actually calls the process “pretty brutal,” thus the idea to test drive another option. He notes that it might be an annoying change for users who carefully curate their grid; however, he says he “would really like to do better by the content today.”Based on a screenshot posted on Threads by one of users participating in the trial, the grid looks very similar to what we’ve become accustomed to with Reels, expect the images are well, rectangle rather than squares. It’s actually not the first time we’v heard Instagram is working on a rectangle-style grid. In 2022, mobile developer Alessandro Paluzzi shared that Instagram was working on the feature.

While it may have been in the idea stage back in 2022, it looks as though it’s now at least being considered for release. At the end of his Instagram story mentioning the feature Mosseri mentions managing the transition, which suggests that the transition to rectangle images might be headed our way soon.
