If you’ve been wanting to try an AI image generator, you can now take Midjourney out for a free spin. Midjourney CEO David Holz announced this week that anyone can now go to the company’s website and generate up to 25 images for free before signing up for the service. The site offers three subscription tiers, ranging from a Basic Plan that costs $10 a month to a Mega Plan for power users at $120 a month.Originally spotted by ZDNet, the free trial is a change from how Midjourney started out two years ago, when it required people to use Discord to create AI images. Users also had to tinker with their prompts quite a bit to get the image they were after. Midjourney launched its website last year; however, it was only available for users who had created at least 10,000 images via Discord. As you might imagine, that high number meant the tool wasn’t available to many users.Using the site requires a Google or Discord account, and people who have already been using Midjourney on Discord will be able to log in and see previously created images. New users can create an account using their Google credentials, and Discord folks can add their Google account once they sign in so they can use a Google login in the future.

Once you’re in, you can create your own images and browse through those made by others. Typing a prompt will get you four different images to choose from, after which you can refine the image to transform it into what you’re looking for. In March, Midjourney added a “Character Reference” feature that allowed users to upload character images that could be incorporated into a prompt for those times when you want someone’s face to look more authentic.
