Newegg Launches Trade-In Program for Pre-Owned Desktop CPUs

PC builders looking to sell a desktop processor now have another option with Newegg’s new CPU trade-in program. The service expands Newegg’s GPU trade-in program, which debuted last year. Like the GPU program, Newegg is offering the CPU trade-ins to help customers pay for an upgrade. “The goal of the program is to help customers obtain current generation hardware for gaming, creating, or professional uses,” the company added. “Newegg’s Trade-In program is unique in that customers can see the trade-in offer upfront, purchase the new product, then subsequently send in their old hardware so they are never without a CPU or GPU in their desktop PC.”

The trade-in option will appear if you try to buy a desktop CPU from Newegg. Users can also go to the retailer’s dedicated site for the trade-in program, which lists the estimated in-store payouts for eligible CPUs and GPUs. “Once a trade-in application is submitted and approved, a free shipping label will be provided to ship the CPU to Newegg for evaluation,” Newegg says. “If the trade is accepted, the customer will receive a refund on their new CPU purchase. If the CPU trade is rejected, customers will get the CPU they sent back from Newegg free of charge.” Users can also receive a payout via a Newegg gift card. But for now, the program only covers CPUs released over the past two years, although this includes Intel’s 13th and 14th generation Core processors, which are facing controversy over a crash bug that can cause irreversible damage. (Intel is advising affected customers to reach out through customer support, which could include replacement.)

The other issue is the payout. Like the GPU trade-in system, Newegg seems to be offering a lower value on the exchanged CPUs compared to their average selling price on eBay. For example, Newegg will offer $320 in exchange for AMD’s Ryzen 9 7950x3d. But on eBay, the average sold price for the chip is closer to $480. That said, selling through eBay also means paying the e-commerce platform around 10% in fees for the final selling price. Despite the price disparity, Newegg is betting its CPU trade-in program will see some demand. The retailer’s GPU trade-in program has already received “thousands of eligible pre-owned graphics cards,” the company said. CPUs and GPUs that are exchanged will then be re-used for Newegg’s refurbished product line.
