Spotify and Apple are at loggerheads again. This time, it’s over a volume control issue.Spotify Connect, which lets iPhone users control the playback on any other device connected to the same Wi-Fi, is losing one of its key features. “Apple has discontinued the technology that enables Spotify to control volume for connected devices using the volume buttons on the device,” Spotify claims on its support page.Spotify says it’s working with Apple “on a solution,” but in the meantime, iPhone users will have to employ a tedious workaround to adjust the volume on connected devices.

If the Spotify Connect feature is running in the background, iPhone users will have to press one of the volume buttons, tap on the notification that appears, and then use the volume slider at the bottom. They can also do so from the Now Playing tab or Connect Menu in the Spotify app.The new method might irritate users who are accustomed to adjusting Spotify Connect volume without looking at their screen. Although Spotify didn’t specify it, it’s clear from their images that users will have to unlock their iPhones just to change the volume.

According to The Verge, Spotify says the problem lies with Apple, which won’t extend the technology it uses for Apple Music on third-party devices to competing services. The beleaguered Sonos app had a similar issue.While some might still be able to use the old, direct method, starting Sept. 3, all iOS users will need to adjust Spotify Connect volume using the in-app slider, according to TechCrunch.
