Summer Game Fest: Does Street Fighter 6 Season 2 Pave the Way for Capcom vs. SNK 3?

Unsurprisingly, Street Fighter 6, the critically acclaimed and commercially successful fighting game, will receive a second season of DLC characters. However, two unlikely roster additions make that upcoming character pack more exciting than expected: Mai Shiranui and Terry Bogard from SNK’s Fatal Fury and The King of Fighters series. The pair haven’t appeared in a Capcom-published fighting game since the beloved Capcom vs. SNK 2: Mark of the Millennium 2001. According to IGN, Terry is slated to make his Street Fighter debut in fall 2024, while Mai is set to arrive in winter 2025. This is a highly unusual move for the Street Fighter series, a franchise that typically features guest characters from other Capcom games (such as Final Fight’s Cody or Rival Schools’ Akira in Street Fighter V), not outside parties.Capcom and SNK were once arcade rivals during the 1990s fighting game explosion, and their competition led to some of the genre’s greatest releases. A series of crossover games followed: Capcom vs. SNK: Millennium Fight 2000, Capcom vs. SNK: Millennium Fight 2000 Pro, Capcom vs. SNK 2: Mark of the Millennium 2001, Capcom vs. SNK 2 EO, SNK vs. Capcom: Match of the Millenium, SNK vs. Capcom: SVC Chaos, SNK vs. Capcom: Card Fighters Clash, SNK vs. Capcom Card Fighters 2 Expand Edition, and SNK vs. Capcom Card Fighters Clash DS.

Street Fighter’s Elena (the capoeira expert) and M. Bison (the maniacal dictator) will join the SNK fighters in Season 2. Elena is due in 2025, while M. Bison is due in summer 2024.How these characters play is a mystery because Capcom revealed the four fighters in an animated short. What’s known is that M. Bison looks radically different than his previous incarnations; he appears far less regal and more grimy in this outing.

Speculation about a potential Capcom and SNK collaboration has been whispered about for years. The re-release of SNK vs. Capcom: Match of the Millenium added fuel to the fire, as did what appeared as SNK-centric clothing options in Street Fighter 6’s character customization mode. With the two companies playing nice again, it seems that Capcom vs. SNK 3 is no longer an impossible dream. Both parties want it to happen.Terry most recently faced off against Street Fighter’s Ryu in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, a Nintendo platform-fighter with an unmatched roster.
