Tribeca Film Festival Will Debut ‘Sora Shorts’ Created By AI

The Tribeca Film Festival is debuting films from a unique source this year: OpenAI.A total of five short films will be shown at the festival that were created using OpenAI’s Sora, a test-to-video model that creates video clips based on textual descriptions. Filmmakers were given only a few weeks to complete their projects, which the film festival says were done “in the spirit of exploration.”Filmmakers were given early access to Sora for the project and were able to mark the film on their own terms as long as they adhered to agreements negotiated with the DGA, WGA, and SAG in 2023 about the use of AI.“Tribeca is rooted in the foundational belief that storytelling inspires change. Humans need stories to thrive and make sense of our wonderful and broken world,” says Jane Rosenthal co-founder and CEO of Tribeca Enterprises. “Sometimes these stories come to us as a feature film, an immersive experience, a piece of art, or even an AI-generated short film. I can’t wait to see what this group of fiercely creative Tribeca alumni come up with.”Participating filmmakers include Bonnie Discepolo, Ellie Foumbi, Nikyatu Jusu, Reza Sixo Safai and Michaela Ternasky-Holland.The films will debut on June 15th at the Tribeca Screening Room after which the festival and OpenAI will host a conversation with the filmmakers about the experience.“It’s great to see how these filmmakers are extending their creativity with Sora, and we are honored for their works to debut at the Tribeca Festival,” COO of OpenAI Brad Lightcap said in a statement. “We’re excited for their short films and eager to learn how we can make Sora a better tool for all creatives.”

In addition to the filmmakers, OpenAI has said it is making the tool available to several visual artists and designers to get a feel for how the tool might be helpful for creatives.Currently, there is no timeline or additional information available on when or if the tool will become available to the general public.
