Netflix is looking really good in August, as most of the other streaming services seem to be getting a little case of the summer sleepies and going light on new content. Conversely, Netflix has a solid slate of returning hits like The Umbrella Academy, popular movies, and a wide variety of international content that draws subscribers from all over the globe. We went through the listings and watched all the trailers to pick out what we think are the best bets for the month. Korean reality competition shows are proving popular on Netflix, and the latest entry, The Influencer, is the weirdest one we’ve seen. A group of 77 social media savants from across platforms like Twitter, TikTok and Instagram are locked together, and the one that gets the most attention over a series of challenges wins. With a total follower count of over 120 million people, they might just teach you something.The Umbrella Academy: Season 4 (August 8)
A timeline reboot can be a tough thing to write around, but The Umbrella Academy has been screwing around with the nature of the universe since its first episode. With the Hargreeves children scattered to the winds once more, this time without their unique powers and abilities, will they be able to contend with a group called the Keepers looking to reset the universe one last time, as well as their adoptive father Reginald back from the dead?GG Precinct (August 22)
In this spin-off from the hit Taiwanese show Marry My Dead Body, police captain Lin Tzu Ching and screwball detective Wu Ming-han have to team up to stop a serial killer who leaves clues in the form of traditional Chinese lexical puzzles and brain-teasers. It’s basically like Silence of the Lambs meets Wordle with a dash of goofy humor, and GG Precinct looks to be a winner.TERMINATOR ZERO (August 29)
Anime might be the optimal medium for the Terminator franchise right now, and this new series from Japanese studio Production I.G. and director Masashi Kudo (most known for Bleach) looks awesome. In TERMINATOR ZERO (they insist we write it in all caps), computer scientist Malcolm Lee is working on an AI system to counter Skynet in 1997 when a killer robot is sent from the future to stop him and end his bloodline.Everything Coming to Netflix in August 2024
